An important mid-19th century study on the interaction between metals and mercury, with implications for metallurgy, corrosion science, and material permeability. First Edition 8vo, original plain wraps sewn: 14 pp (renumbered 1-14). Horsford (1818-1893) received his bachelor s degree in civil engineering from Rensselaer School (now RPI) in 1837. In 1842 he read the first American edition (1841) of Liebig s organic chemistry book, translated by Harvard Professor John White Webster. He was assisted financially to learn chemistry for two years in Liebig s laboratory at Giessen. In 1847, with the recommendations of Professors Webster and Liebig, he was appointed to the Professor Rumford Chair of Chemistry at the Lawrence Scientific School at Harvard, presenting the first course and eventually appointed Dean. (Professor Webster, appointed to the Harvard faculty in 1824 was convicted of murder in 1849 in the Parkman-Webster case and hanged in 1850). In 1854, with entrepreneur George F. Wilson, Horsford formed the Rumford Chemical Works, which developed Rumford Baking Powder among other products and is recognized as an American Chemical Society National Chemical Landmark.
