A Practical Treatise upon Eczema, Including its Lichenous, Impetiginous, and Pruriginous Varieties
London: John Churchill & Sons, 11 New Burlington Street, 1863.
A Practical Treatise upon Eczema is a focused monograph by the Glasgow physician T. M'Call Anderson, published in 1863 by the prominent London medical house of John Churchill & Sons, addressing one of the most common and clinically troublesome categories of skin disease encountered in nineteenth-century practice. Anderson, Physician to the Dispensary for Skin Diseases and to the Deaf and Dumb Institution in Glasgow, brings his specialist clinical experience to bear specifically on eczema and its closely related presentations, including its lichenous (lichen-like, thickened), impetiginous (crusted, infected), and pruriginous (intensely itching) varieties — a granular, clinically-driven subdivision that reflects the increasingly specialized approach to dermatological classification developing in British medicine during this period. This work followed closely on Anderson's earlier treatise on parasitic skin affections, together representing a sustained body of specialist dermatological writing from a single Glasgow-based author across the early 1860s.
Condition & Binding: This copy remains in its original publisher's cloth binding — an attractive oxblood/red cloth with a blind-stamped decorative floral border and central oval medallion to the front and rear boards, and a gilt-lettered spine reading "ANDERSON ON SKIN DISEASES — ECZEMA." The binding is in solid, presentable condition, with light rubbing to the extremities and corners and a small amount of fading/toning to the cloth, but no major structural issues — the boards remain firmly attached and square, and the spine lettering is bright and fully legible. Internally, the text block shows moderate foxing and spotting throughout, somewhat heavier on the title page and surrounding leaves, consistent with the aging of period wove paper, though the text remains complete and fully legible. Overall- very good. Item #939
