Du Rachitis, de la Fragilité des Os, de l’Ostéomalacie

Paris: Rignoux, Imprimeur de la Faculté de Médecine, 1852.

A scarce mid-nineteenth-century French medical study devoted to rickets, bone fragility, and osteomalacia, authored by E. J. Beylard and published in Paris in 1852. This work reflects the growing clinical and pathological interest in metabolic bone diseases during a period when modern understandings of nutrition and skeletal development were still emerging. Drawing on clinical observation and contemporary medical theory, Beylard examines the causes, progression, and distinguishing features of these conditions, contributing to the broader nineteenth-century effort to classify and differentiate diseases affecting bone structure and development.

The volume is particularly notable for its striking lithographic plates depicting pediatric cases of rickets, rendered with clinical precision and visual impact. These illustrations, likely produced after drawings by contemporary medical artists (noted in the plates, e.g., “D’après nature par Roussin”), provide important visual documentation of deformities associated with the disease and would have served as essential diagnostic references.

Condition & Binding: Bound in later decorative marbled paper-covered boards with a paper spine label, likely a 20th-century rebinding; binding remains tight and sound. Text block shows moderate foxing and scattered spotting throughout, heavier in places but generally readable. Plates are present and in good condition with only light toning and occasional marginal spotting. Edges slightly worn; corners gently bumped. Overall- very good.
