A substantial early eighteenth-century collected edition of the medical and anatomical works of Giorgio Baglivi, one of the most influential physicians of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Baglivi, a key figure in the development of iatro-mechanical medicine, emphasized the structural and mechanical understanding of bodily processes, helping to bridge classical Galenic traditions and emerging modern medical science. This Opera Omnia brings together his major treatises, including writings on fibers, circulation, and pathology, offering insight into early modern theories of disease and bodily function at a pivotal moment in medical history.
The present 1715 Antwerp edition (Editio Nona) reflects the continued demand for Baglivi’s works across Europe, incorporating additional dissertations and related treatises. The volume is illustrated with an engraved author portrait and includes several diagrams and engraved plates within the text. Of particular note is the presence of early ownership markings, including a manuscript inscription (“Ex libris A. Penn 1790”) and a later dated signature (1900), as well as an engraved armorial bookplate (Van der Hoeven), adding layers of provenance and historical interest to the copy.
Condition & Binding: Bound in full vellum (likely contemporary), with visible soiling, discoloration, and wear consistent with age, including surface staining and minor edge wear. Binding remains intact and structurally sound. Internally, pages show moderate toning, scattered foxing, and occasional spotting throughout. Engraved portrait and plates present (as shown), with some offsetting and light wear. Early manuscript ownership inscription to front endpaper and an engraved bookplate affixed to pastedown.
