The Dermatomes in Man

A rare separately bound offprint of Otfrid Foerster’s important 1933 study, The Dermatomes in Man, originally published in the journal Brain (Vol. 56, Part I, March 1933). Foerster, one of the leading neurosurgeons of the early twentieth century, was instrumental in mapping sensory nerve root distributions through clinical observation and surgical cases. In this landmark paper, he refines and clarifies the anatomical and clinical understanding of dermatomes, building upon the foundational work of Henry Head and earlier neurologists.
The study draws upon surgical resections, clinical anesthesia mapping, and comparative observations to demonstrate the distribution and overlap of spinal sensory roots. The article includes photographic clinical plates and dermatome diagrams illustrating areas of anesthesia and nerve distribution following operative procedures. This work remains historically significant in neurology and neurosurgery, forming part of the modern anatomical basis for dermatome charts still used in medicine today.
Condition & Binding: Bound in blue cloth with gilt titling to the spine reading “Foerster – The Dermatomes in Man – 1933.” Likely a private or institutional binding of the journal offprint. The binding is firm and fully attached, with light edge wear and mild surface rubbing. Internally clean with light age toning. Several blank leaves are bound at the rear following the conclusion of the article (as issued or bound). There is an “Ex Libris Arthur Ward” bookplate to the front pastedown and a pencil inscription to the front free endpaper reading: “Margaret G. Kennard, Breslau, 1935” (Foerster was based in Breslau, adding contextual interest). Overall- very good. Item #845
