A scarce Elzevir medical treatise on pharmacology and the theory of compound medicines by Johannes Prevot (Jean Prévot), a 17th-century physician and medical scholar associated with the University of Strasbourg. This important work discusses the methods of compounding, preparing, and combining medicinal substances in accordance with Galenic and Aristotelian principles, while also referencing Islamic medical authorities such as Avicenna. Edited and restored by Adolphus Storck, this Amsterdam edition by the Elzevir Press preserves Prevot’s systematic approach to materia medica and early pharmaceutical science. Topics include the proportionality of ingredients, preparation of antidotes, and empirical testing of remedies — key developments in the transition from medieval to modern chemistry and pharmacy.
Printed in the classic Elzevir style, with crisp Roman type and decorative woodcut devices, including the printer’s Minerva emblem on the title page. The preface to “D. Condition: Endpapers show early manuscript notes and an 18th-century ownership inscription. Title leaf somewhat toned and foxed, with a faint library stamp and remnants of a removed bookplate.
