Dr. Lewis was Professor of Clinical Medicine (Dermatology) at Cornell University Medical College, Attending Dermatologist at The New York Hospital, and Secretary of the American Board of Dermatology and Syphilology, making this an authoritative elementary treatise aimed squarely at non-specialists and students needing a practical, usable guide to diagnosing and treating skin conditions. The contents are organized by disease category rather than by body region, opening with Diagnostic Methods and moving through Acne and the Seborrheic Dermatoses, Pruritus (including psychogenic implications), the Eczematous Dermatoses, Urticaria/Toxic Erythemas/Drug Eruptions, the "So-Called" Collagen Diseases (lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, dermatomyositis, and related conditions), and the Chronic Vesiculo-Bullous Disorders (dermatitis herpetiformis, pemphigus), continuing on to additional chapters on dermatologic therapy and a formulary.

Per the author's preface, all photographs in the text — with only two exceptions — were taken and prepared specifically for this publication by Miss Mary Ellen Hopper, described by Lewis as "an indispensable individual in our department," making her the book's uncredited-on-title-page but explicitly acknowledged photographer/illustrator. The preface also credits Dr. John W. Dougherty and Dr. Douglas Torre with contributing to specific chapters (Diagnostic Methods, Dermatologic Therapy, and the Formulary), giving the volume a genuinely collaborative, department-driven feel typical of mid-century academic dermatology texts.
Condition & Binding: This is a hardcover volume bound in teal/blue-green cloth boards with a red spine label bearing gilt-stamped title lettering ("PRACTICAL DERMATOLOGY") and gilt author/publisher lettering ("LEWIS" / "SAUNDERS") along the spine. The covers show noticeable shelf wear, including visible fraying and bumping at the spine head and tail, rubbing along the board edges and corners, and some scattered surface marks/scuffs on the front board.
